Whats the best tip you can offer others for having some summer fun despite Migraines?
Er. Well. Huh. I don’t think I’d be the best person to ask about summer fun given I’m a hermit and avoid sunlight like a vampire. All my hobbies are indoor hobbies and generally require just myself. Generally I wear a hat and wear sunglasses when I even contemplate leaving the house… whether I plan on having fun or not. Seriously, I’m not kidding. I’m a hermit, excluding work and if I didn’t work I sure wouldn’t leave the house every day (maybe at night) And I loath the sun. I’m all up for some evening fun, but only on the weekend and even then… well, only once every six months or so. I like my cave.
But here goes my best tip which works for migraines or chronic pain such as fibromyalgia as well.
Be Prepared. Always plan ahead and be prepared before you go anywhere to anticipate your needs. While this generally includes the afore mentioned hat, sunglasses… it also includes medications (I always keep a days worth of everything on me for emergencies), always keep your triptan on you and any rescue med you use. Any other med that may be necessary depending on what sort of timeline you are looking at… maybe an anti nausea med, anti-vertigo, pepto, whatever aggravating symptoms that may occur. A pillow and blanket in the car can be nice if you need to crash, as well as the black out sleep thingies you put over your eyes. A good idea are those cold packs you break to turn to ice, or the migraine muscle stickers (like the muscle ones you can buy, but they are cool) or a migraine balm. Plan your day, your breaks and avoid triggers as to avoid any migraine while out and about but if you get one at least you will be able to handle it as best you can. You can even make a little emergency migraine pack to have in your purse or car.
Another tip that is just a chronic pain one is that sometimes you have to go out there and do things that you want to do, even when you know it will cause pain as long as you are willing to suffer the consequences. Occasionally something comes up… some social event or usually a family event that I want to do or go to but I know it will cause me pain in some way or another. But sometimes I’m willing to pay the price. Sometimes not, mind you. The key is… being prepared and giving myself ample recovery time. It is the sort of thing when you have chronic you pain start to think about; if you can do something, if you have a day for recovery (by that I mean even if it is something that required more walking if you have fibro) so it will not affect your work week and if the desire is worth the cost. I rarely do anything other than work but when I do attempt to have a life I have to be careful not to overbudget my time and anything I do put on the schedule beyond work has to be calculated into that cost benefit formula. Some things are easy to do, do not flare up our symptoms and there is little cost if we are prepared and other things are more costly and more likely to flare our symptoms but we may want to do them anyway simply to do it.
