CBD which is the short form for Cannabidiol is one of the hundreds of chemical compounds or cannabinoids that are naturally present in the marijuana or cannabis plant. Cannabis, as you may already know – is a plant that carries psychoactive properties because of which it has had a rather controversial history. It has been used for recreational purposes because of the ‘high’ it can induce.

CBD oil, however, comes from hemp. This plant does not carry psychoactive properties. Cannabidiol is made by diluting the CBD that has been extracted with a form of carrier oil like hemp seed or coconut oil. Industrial Hemp Farms is involved in this exact business.

And, even though cannabidiol comes from the same family of plants like cannabis, it doesn’t cause the ‘high’ or any intoxicating effects because it lacks THC (the very cannabinoid which carries psychoactive properties).

Unlike THC, cannabidiol is not an intoxicating compound; rather it’s medicinal. It’s not habit-forming either which is just icing on the cake. CBD, when used properly, is capable of managing an entire spectrum of health conditions without any inadvertent side-effects on physical or mental well-being.

CBD Oil: Pros and Cons

Pros of CBD oil

Cannabinoids are quite similar to a whole bunch of chemicals that the human body produces. They interact via the body’s Endocannabinoid System. These are responsible for controlling things like movement, pain perception, memory, appetite, etc.

There’s plenty of literature available online that points to CBD’s ability for managing inflammation and pain. It can help relax tight/sore muscles among other benefits. Below are some of the benefits of using CBD oil –

Helps fight inflammation and manages pain

One of the most powerful aspects of CBD is its ability to effectively manage pain and reduce inflammation without causing a whole bunch of long-term side-effects since it’s a natural compound. Because it’s anti-inflammatory, CBD can help with inflammation, pain related to arthritis, MS and even several other forms of chronic pains.

Helpful in Managing Anxiety and Depression

Both of these conditions, if not managed properly, can manifest in the form of physical ailments eventually. It’s not uncommon for medical practitioners to resort to pharmaceutical aid to manage anxiety and depression; however, most of those drugs accompany numerous side-effects such as nausea, loss of appetite, etc. Moreover, a lot of these drugs are habit-forming.

It’s a good thing that CBD offers a more natural and holistic route to achieve the same effects without the person having to fear becoming dependent on it. Cannabidiol can manage several mental health issues like generalized anxiety disorder, OCD, depression, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.

Treatment of Epilepsy

So far, this has been the most promising area in the medical history where CBD has had the biggest impact. It’s evident from the fact that not so long ago, the FDA approved Epidiolex, which is a CBD-based medication designed to manage and treat epilepsy. A bunch of studies and clinical trials performed over the years have indicated that CBD could indeed control seizures, especially in kids. What’s more, cannabidiol was found to be more effective in managing symptoms of epilepsy in patients who failed to respond to traditional therapies.

Acne Reduction

Acne is an inflammatory condition. Myriad contributing factors can lead to acne such as genetics, underlying inflammation, bacteria, and overproduction of sebum. Sebum is the oily secretion that is produced by the sebaceous gland in the skin. As per this study, Cannabidiol could indeed help to keep sebum production in check. On top of that, its anti-inflammatory nature can further reduce any underlying skin inflammation.

Cons of CBD oil

Even though cannabidiol is a natural preparation and overall it’s considered safe for consumption; it may exhibit certain adverse effects in an occasional user. It may also interact with certain medications. So, if you are on one, be sure to consult with your doctor first to ensure its safety.

With that said, it’s good to know about the possible side-effects of using CBD:

Changes in weight and appetite

In an occasional user, CBD can cause dry mouth and loss of appetite. Some users tend to experience a sensation of discomfort after ingesting it. Surprisingly enough, in some users, it can have the exact opposite effect; meaning it can cause increased hunger. These changes in appetite could lead to changes in weight in the long-run. Check out this clinical paper for more information on this.

Ingesting too much CBD could have diarrhea-like effects. Therefore, if you do tend to experience this symptom, be sure to lower the dosage. Some users may experience a few other associated symptoms as well such as general sickness, irritability, nausea, etc.; all of which are linked with digestive issues.

May induce drowsiness

CBD may also lead to fatigue and drowsiness as can often cause the blood pressure to drop by minor points. These feelings largely depend on the method of consumption and these sensations could last for up to 6 hours.

May Elevate Liver Enzymes

Some experts feel that CBD could interact with the liver in the same way that alcohol does. And, while it may sound potentially dangerous – as long as you are using CBD in a limited and controlled manner; it’s not something you need to worry about.

May Interact With Other Medications

As we already mentioned, if you are taking regular prescription drugs; particularly those related to blood pressure or if you are a pregnant or lactating woman, it’s essential to talk to your doctor to establish the safety of using CBD oil. It’s very much possible for CBD to interact with certain medications in an unhealthy way. So, be cautious.

In Conclusion

We’re still in the process of learning more and more about CBD’s potential as well as its safety aspect. And, while the studies are limited, it does come across as a powerful natural way to manage myriad physical and mental health issues.

Also, since CBD is available in a variety of products, you can get it in your system in a variety of ways such as via topical application, sublingual administration, inhalation, oral ingestion, etc.

  1. Hello Nikki, thanks for sharing this information. The fact that CBD is non-psychoactive makes CBD an appealing option for anyone looking for relief without disconcerting feelings of tiredness or fogginess. I’ve learned a lot on this.
    Keep safe and healthy!

    1. I have explored it as an option and have considered trying it again… because as you said, no real issues with sleepiness or any sort of high aspect and that is appealing. I have tried THC and it is beneficial for pain but it does make me so tired often and it seems like I lose more functionality instead of gaining some.

      1. Yeah, and not all products can have the same effect on us, that’s why we have to be extra careful about using and choosing CBD oils. And articles like this is a great help for newbies to get informed 🙂
